BIOME MULTIMEDIA PROJECT 2003

Introduction:

A Biome is a large complex of communities characterized by distinctive plants and animals which have adapted to their particular environment and climate. The six main biomes listed in your textbook include:

1. Desert
4. Tropical Rain Forest
2. Tundra
5. Deciduous Forest
3. Taiga
6. Grasslands or Savannah

Task:

Answer the following question. How do the animals and plants of a particular biome adapt to their environment?

Directions:

Part 1.

Working in groups of three, pick a biome to research.

Research your biome and find at least three plants and three animals that are specific to your biome. How do they adapt to their environment? Describe the climate, including temperature and precipitation. Where is your biome located? Be specific. You may use the world almanac to find the monthly climate. (Hint: find a city in your biome)

You may use the Encarta CD, Groliers CD, Eyewitness Science CD, Rainforest CD, your science book, and the Internet. Use the links below.

Directions:

Part 2.

Using Inspiration, create a mind map of your biome that includes animals and plants and how they adapt to their environment, the location of your biome, the climate including temperature and precipitation. Include as much information as you can. Print your mind map and then change the view to outline and print your outline. Remember to include your name.

Part 3.

Using information from your text book or almanac, create two 12 month graphs about the climate of your biome using the Excell spreadsheet from Microsoft Office or the spreadsheet program from Clarisworks. One graph should represent temperature and the other graph should represent precipitation. Remember to use labels. For extra credit represent the data in another form (circle graph, line graph, etc.) Print copies to be passed in to Mrs. Brassard.

Part 4.

Plan a slide show using PowerPoint or AppleWorks about your biome. Follow your outline and create a story board.(See Mrs. Brassard for story board) It should include:

a. Title page with picture representing your biome.

b. Map of your biome with labels. (continents, oceans, major countries, etc.)

c. Description and picture of plants and how they adapt to their environment.(3 slides min.)

d. Description and picture of animals and how they adapt to their environment.(3 slides min.)

e. Describe the climate; include temperature and rainfall (include the graph)

f. Credits page with your photo or photos. You may use the digital camera.

g. Include at least six imported graphics from the Internet and Encarta.

Evaluation:

Part 5.

Your final project will include:

1. A mind map of your biome

10 points

2. An outline of your biome

10 points

3. Two graphs of your biome, one showing climate, one showing precipition.

20 points

4. A Power Point or AppleWorks presentation of your biome.

60 Points

Conclusion:

Be prepared to present this to your class. We might even put your slide show on the web!
