Glenbrook Middle School

Challenging and Supporting Every Student

June 2011

Dear Parents and Glenbrook 2011-2012 Sixth Graders:

Reading is the one skill in which students need to be proficient across all disciplines.  In fact, reading is considered to be a “gateway skill.”  Students who excel in reading most often excel in all content areas.

According to a study conducted at Texas A & M, there is a very strong correlation between student scores on standardized tests and the amount of time students devote to outside of school reading.  Students who scored at the 90th percentile or above read an average of 40 minutes per day outside of school.  Students who scored in the 50th percentile read an average of 13 minutes per day outside of school.

With this in mind, the ELA teachers are asking students to read Hatchet by Gary Paulsen as a required summer reading book, and two books of their choice. Storrs Library has a wonderful selection of books and is a great place to visit on a hot summer day.  There are also many book titles for your child at the websites listed below:

Students will not be tested on the books, but ELA teachers have activities planned at the beginning of the school year, which feature summer reading.  It is important that Hatchet be reviewed before students return to school.

To help remember book’s story, a simple form is available to record the relevant information for each book.  Parents are asked to sign each form and are encouraged to discuss the reading with their children or perhaps read a book together.  Students should bring the three forms to ELA class during the first full week of school.

Sincerely,

Glenbrook Seventh Grade English Teachers
