The School Department will be holding a public forum to gather input from parents regarding possible changes to student transportation.  The forum is scheduled for Wednesday, January 21st at 7:00 p.m. in the Room A15 in the Central Office (changed location).  Enter through the District Offices' main doors, off Bliss Road.

As we approach another budget season, we are striving to find ways to keep a balanced budget.  Therefore, the School Committee has formed a Transportation Sub-Committee to study current transportation practices and their effectiveness, both operationally and financially.

We believe that it may be possible to save funds if we consolidate routes and place middle school students and high school students on the same busses.  This has been successfully done in other districts.  This would result in changing the starting and ending times for students which would maximize use of our buses.

Users’ fees are also being examined as they only cover a portion of the transportation costs.

Another topic that will be examined is after school bussing to Greenwood and the JCC.  By having these groups provide their own bussing, it would allow us to cover our own athletic needs without incurring extra costs used to supplement these programs.  While we appreciate and support these after school opportunities, we need to look at what is most cost effective for our own program.

METCO bussing will not be impacted as this bussing is grant funded by the State.

The purpose of this meeting is to share current thinking and gather community input.  We hope that you will be able to join us.

 Regards,

Transportation Sub-Committee
