Dear Longmeadow Families:

A Transportation Committee has explored options for increasing transportation for students and consolidating busses in order to keep expenses level.  Each bus costs approximately $50,000 annually, so it is important that busses are running at full capacity.

The Transportation Committee has studied our current routes, and has planned to offer more services to more students.  In order to provide more services without adding more busses, it has been recommended that the District combine middle school and high school routes.  In addition, the combined routes should provide shorter rider time for our students.  This was done already in many districts with great success, and we are confident that our high school leaders will make sure this is a positive experience for our middle school students.

Many thoughts were shared at our forum and via e-mail; all suggestions were considered.  Here are the final recommendations that will be made to the School Committee at the meeting on Monday, April 13, 2015.

  • The same number of busses will be utilized and services will be expanded.
  • The routes will run primarily along main streets.
  • Students won't cross main roads unless there is a crossing guard or stop light present
  • High school and middle school students will be transported together
  • Middle School students will sit in the front of the bus
  • High school students will sit in the back of the bus
  • Middle school students and high school students will wear different badge colors on  lanyards so the bus drivers can easily identify students
  • Discipline matters will be taken seriously and handled by building principals
  • Bus drivers will be trained  before school opens
    • Bully prevention and intervention
    • Seating plan for middle/high school students
  • LHS students will be dropped off at the back of the high school to avoid contributing to traffic in the front of LHS
  • The following start times will be used for each level so that busses have time to pick up and drop off students between runs:

Elementary                                            Middle School                                       High School

Doors open at 8:30 am                           Doors open at 7:50 am                           Doors open at 7:00 am

Instruction begins at 8:45 am                  Instruction begins at 8:00 am                  Instruction begins at 7:44 am

Instruction ends at 2:45 pm                     Instruction ends at 2:20 pm                     Instruction ends at 2:15 pm

Bus fees have also been discussed.  The Transportation Committee is recommending raising the fees to $225 next year, FY 16, with a family cap of $450.  As always, the rate of fees is considered each year when the school budget is developed.  If you would like to share your thoughts with the School Committee on this topic, please email them at
