Process

Introduction

Congratulations! You won a piece of land on a beautiful lake somewhere in the United States. You decided to build a cottage and enjoy every summer there with your family After your cottage was selected, your contractor started working on it. He then told you that it was almost complete but he had to leave. You have three more rooms to finish. Many decisions have to be made. Are you ready for this adventure?

Task

You will be working in a group of three. The group needs to decide on a cottage after you look at the floor plans. After that decision has been made, each member of the group will have a different responsibility. Decide who will take care of the kitchen, the living room and the bedroom. Here are the responsibilities of each:

Process

1. Your group needs to choose a cottage from the two plans below. Once you have chosen a plan, print out ONE floor plan for your group.

2. Each of you needs to create a spreadsheet to keep track of all your costs. Open up Microsoft Excel and open a new spreadsheet. Save it as "Cottage Kitchen", "Cottage Living Room" or "Cottage Bedroom". It's up to the group to decide how much of your budget should be allocated to each room.

Make sure you include a 5% sales tax on everything you buy. Be careful not to go over budget. As a group you have $24,000.00 to spend.

3. At the end of the activity, all your worksheets and spreadsheets will be collected and put into one folder. This will turned in and graded according to the rubric below.

Ceramic Tile

Click on the Tile Worksheet and print one out for your group to choose the tile you like.

Go the Home Depot site and check under "Know How". Choose "Calculators". Then choose "Ceramic Tiles" in .the pop-up menu. Put in your length and width and calculate how many tiles you will need. Remember to put this cost in your spreadsheet.

Carpeting the Rooms
Click on the Carpet Worksheet and print out one for your group so that you can choose the carpet you like.

Go the Home Depot site and check under "Know How". Choose "Calculators". Then choose "Carpet" in .the pop-up menu. Put in your length and width and calculate how many tiles you will need. Remember to put this cost in your spreadsheet.

Painting the Room
Go to the Lowes Interior paint site and choose your paint.

After you know the price, go the Home Depot site and check under "Know How". Choose "Calculators". Then choose "Paint" in .the pop-up menu. All walls are 9 feet high and baseboards are 6 in. Put in your length and width and calculate how many tiles you will need. Remember to put this cost in your spreadsheet.

Kitchen Appliances
You need to outfit the kitchen with a refrigerator, a stove, a dishwasher, and a washer and a dryer. If you have money left over, you may purchase other appliances. Make sure you keep track of money spent in your spreadsheet.

Go to Sears and shop for appliances.

Furnishing your Rooms
Go to Levitz Furniture Store to buy furniture for your bedroom, living room and kitchen. Make sure that you keep track of money spent in your spreadsheet.
