Introduction

You are a government intern that has been asked at the request of the President to investigate the National Park Service in DC. After careful investigation you will be asked to complete a questionnaire prepared by the Cabinet and do some mathematical calculations. Your final report must also include your opinion, supported with details, as to which site was most impressive!

The Task

The student intern will investigate the several historic sites at the National Mall in Washington, DC. using the Internet. The student intern will learn specific details concerning the various sites. The student intern will then complete a questionnaire concerning the various sites. The questionnaire will involve historical details and mathematical computation. At the conclusion of this activity the student intern will gain a better understanding of the historical significance of the memorials in Washington, DC.

The Process

Listed below are the steps you need to follow to complete your webquest assignment. Good luck!

  1. Make a decision to work alone or with a partner.
  2. Print out a copy of the worksheet entitled INVESTIGATE.
  3. Go to National Park Service Internet site.
  4. Answer questions on the INVESTIGATE worksheet.
  5. Print out the Cabinet questionnaire entitled QUESTIONNAIRE.
  6. Complete the questionnaire.
  7. Write a one paragraph essay using ClarisWorks to answer the following question:
    • Which site impressed you the most and why?
      • Remember to use a topic sentence.
      • Use three supporting details.
      • Write a concluding sentence.

Students will be evaluated based on three assignments:

  1. National Mall Investigative Worksheet
  2. Cabinet Questionnaire
  3. One paragraph essay

If students work in pairs, they need to turn in only one assignment packet per group. Packets will receive a score of 1-4 on each assignment.

The overall grade will be a point system. Each student will receive a total score from 0-12 on all three assignment. The following scale will then be used to determine grades:
  • 10-12 (Excellent Work -A)
  • 7 - 9 (Good Work - B)
  • 4 - 6 (Satisfactory Work - C)
  • 1 - 3 (Unsatisfactory Work - D)

Conclusion

When you have completed your webquest journey, you should have explored sites at the National Mall in Washington, DC. Your investigative worksheet on seven sites should be completed. This investigative worksheet will then provide the necessary data to complete a questionnaire for the Cabinet. The final product of your webquest will be to write a one paragraph essay stating which site at the National Mall is most impressive. The President and the Cabinet will be grateful for your successful mission. The knowledge that you will gain should help you to appreciate the history of our great nation.
